Jane Child - I Don't Wanna Fall In Love (1990)

Billboard Hot 100: #2
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Tracks: #6

I was just listening to the afternoon old school mix on my local radio station today (V 100.7 - Milwaukee) and they played this song. I most likely would've never remembered it if I hadn't heard it today, it really took me back to my early childhood. I was about 4 years old when this came out and that about as far back as I can remember.

Anyway, this was the first single from her debut album, and her only major hit

One of the hardest beats of the mid-90s, that bassline was sick...

Sunday, November 15, 2009

Bell Biv Devoe - Gangsta (1992)

Billboard Hot 100: #21
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #22

This song was only released as a single. It was only moderately successful, but it didn't take a Top 20 single to push an album to success back in those days, so I'm not sure why this wasn't included on their second album "Hootie Mack"

Monday, November 9, 2009

The first single from their gold selling fourth album "Poverty's Paradise". This song was a moderate hit during the Spring of 1995, but was pretty much forgotten about once they released "Feel Me Flow" as the second single, which became one of their most well known songs.

Naughty By Nature - Craziest

Fabu - Just Roll (1995)

These girls released one single, that's it. No album. They just vanished from the scene after this song. I wonder what they're up to nowadays.

Billboard Hot 100: #88
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #20

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Usher - Think Of You (1995)

Billboard Hot 100: #58
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #8

"You Make Me Wanna" is widely considered to be Usher's breakthough hit. It was the song that exposed him to the Mainstream Top 40 audience. But before that, he had one of the bigger Urban hits of 1995. This was second single from his self-titled debut album. Definitely one of the most underrated and forgotten R&B hits of the 90s.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Da Brat - Sittin On Top Of The World (1996)

Billboard Hot 100: #30
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #18
Hot Rap Tracks: #2

The first single from her second album "Anuthatantrum"

Monifah - I Miss You (1995)

Billboard Hot 100: #56
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Tracks: #16

You could really put any single of hers other than "Touch It" in the forgotten/underappreciated category, but I really think this song was pretty underrated even when it was getting airplay. This was the first single from her debut album, "Moods…Moments".

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

SWV - Right Here (Original Version) (1992)

Billboard Hot 100: #92
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #16

The debut single from the very popular 90s R&B trio. This song was a fairly successful hit, but it was overshadowed by their second single "So Into You", which many people consider to be their "breakthrough" hit. A little under a year later, they released the "Human Nature" remix to "Right Here" and it became the second biggest hit of their careers after their #1 hit "Weak", almost completely overshadowing the original version of the song.

Billboard Hot 100: #29
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #14
Hot Rap Tracks: #6

The lead single from his debut album "Life In 1472". It a popular song at the time, but it was quickly overshadowed by the Jay-Z assisted second single "Money Ain't A Thang".

Keith Sweat featuring Kut Klose - Get Up On It (1994)

Billboard Hot 100: #62
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #12

Third single and title track of his fourth album. This was also the debut of his proteges Kut Close (who had another fogotten hit that I'll post in the future)

Saturday, September 26, 2009

Ludacris, LL Cool J and Keith Murray (2001)

Billboard Hot 100: #87
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #32
Hot Rap Tracks: #6

The song that made the term "badunkadunk" popular

"Goodness gracious good god almighty, you got a badunkadunk girl don't hurt nobody!"

Classic. lol

P.S., you'd think that they would actually have some, I don't know....FATTY GIRLS in this video, since the song is titled "Fatty Girl". Maybe it's because I'm from the midwest, but those chicks looked pretty slim to me.

Amerie - Talkin' To Me (2003)

Billboard Hot 100: #51
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #18

The second single from her debut album, "All I Have"

Thursday, September 24, 2009

Kris Kross - Alright (1993)

Billboard Hot 100: #19
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: 8
Hot Rap Tracks: #1

The first single from their second album "Da Bomb". I don't know why most people consider Kris Kross one hit wonders. "Jump" was by far their biggest hit, but they had three more Top 20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. This was one of them.

Silk - Hooked On You (1995)

Billboard Hot 100: #54
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #12

The official 1st single from their self-titled second album. It wasn't a huge hit, but it was hot.

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

New Edition - Hit Me Off (1996)

Billboard Hot 100: #3
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #1

At the time, this was the first single New Edition released as a group in 7 years. "Hit Me Off" is New Edition's highest charting single to date on the Hot 100, peaking at #3. It was topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart for three weeks.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - Look Into My Eyes (1997)

Billboard Hot 100: #4
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #4
Hot Rap Tracks: #2

When you think of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, the first song that comes to mind is "Tha Crossroads". The next song to come to mind is probably "1st of Tha Month", and after that you'll probably think of "Thuggish Ruggish Bone", "For Tha Love of $", their comeback hit "I Tried", and you'll probably name some album cuts before you think of this song. It was the second highest charting single of their careers behind "Tha Crossroads" and the single went platinum, but it seems like most people forget about "Look Into My Eyes" when they talk about BTNH's most popular songs.
